D7629 Restoration Progress in 2005

D7629 has given a couple of years of service at the GCR and GCRN. As regular visitors will know, I'd concentrated on internal restoration of electrical and mechanical systems. The worst cab has been removed for the floor to be totally replaced with new steelwork. I felt that this was the only option given the extent of the problem. Though the work has taken considerably longer than planned, this has been the best way to ensure the problem is addressed properly and negating the need for continual remedial attention.

The restoration will return the loco to as-built two-tone BR Green livery.

Previous restoration activity is chronicled here.

Corrosion Central!

This is the cab showing the section of rotten floor removed. The lower bodyside had to be treated also, as has the lower front.

Yours truly gettign some therapy cutting into the cab floor.

Another view showing the extensive corrosion on the cab floor.

Again, the bodyside in this view has now also seen a great deal of work to cut-out and replace steelwork.

View of the cab floor from the inside of the removed cab. On the far side the floor has rotted to nothing (eventually making the driver's seat unsafe).

A view of the rotten cab floor (secondman side), showing the extensive corrosion damage. The first section has been cut out.
