D7629 Restoration Progress in 2004

D7629 has given a couple of years of service at the GCR and GCRN. As regular visitors will know, I'd concentrated on internal restoration of electrical and mechanical systems. This summer the opportunity has been taken to start on the external restoration. The timing for the start of work has been largely due to the cabs, with one so-bad that the floor section under the driver's side has rotted completely. The restoration will return the loco to as-built two-tone BR Green livery.

Check out current restoration activity at my Blog

Previous restoration activity is chronicled here.

Air brake and control connections between the loco and cab

The drivers position in the removed cab. Note the absence of floor!

One of the GCRN volunteers, Arthur, lending a hand sanding the bodyside

The cab removed and beside the loco in the shed at Ruddington

Detail of the frame with cab removed. Note the cab behind the loco.

The bodyside before filling. Note that the rust around the window appertures has been treated and painted with oxide.

New windows and seals will be fitted.

A start is made on filling the uneven bodysides.

The loco with cab removed

The bulkhead joint has been cleaned and painted with red oxide paint. Water ingress had corroded the joint.

Filling the welds on the new patches in the bodyside. Lots of filling and sanding and filling and sanding..........

The other side of the loco similarly treated

The MW cables had been severed since before I bought the loco in 1999. They had been joined in a junction box that had rotted completely....

The cab is now on it's back to provide access to the rotten "floor". The level of corrosion can be seen in this shot
